Google's first core update of the year was launched on 13 March 2025 and completed 14 days later on 27 March 2025.

On release, Google described it as a regular update to better surface content from all types of sites:

"This is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites. We also continue our work to surface more content from creators through a series of improvements throughout this year. Some have already happened; additional ones will come later."

Forum sites

The update appear to have affected forums significantly. A number of analysts including Lily Ray and Glenn Gabe noted this trend. Some forum sites surged but more dropped than increased, with major drops among some.

Google started boosting forum content in late 2023 with sites such as Reddit and Quora seeing a massive boost from the November 2023 update.

This latest update may be a correction of sorts. However, a notable exception is Reddit, which seems to be surging again across many countries. Glenn Gabe attributed this to Reddit's AI-translated content which they've been scaling and now ranks well across multiple languages and countries.

It's questionable whether auto-generated machine translated content should be ranking so well, according to Google's own guidelines on scaled content abuse. Glenn Gabe explores this further in his blog post.

Check your rankings

Google didn't give any specific guidance about this update, but linked again to its general guidance on core updates.

It's time now the dust has settled to check your rankings to see if your site has been affected.
