Visual Capitalist has taken data from Google Trends going all the way back to 2001, to highlight some of the top keyword searches on Google year by year.
Top trends are different from top searches, as they show terms which have taken off with a spike in popuarity. For example, searches for Donald Trump had spectacular growth in 2016. Search volume remained high thereafter, but the term no longer appears on the lists of top trending terms as search growth had plateaued.
The infographic provides a fascinating snapshot of what's caught our attention over the past 20 years.
